The Pyrenees have a hidden dimension, a parallel world carved out by water and time! This network of galleries and chambers is waiting to be discovered during your vacation at our campsite in the Basque Country! Geology, best spots and guides: find out all you need to know about caving in the Basque Country!

What you need to know about caving in the Basque Country

  • Caves or caving trails: caving is an activity accessible to everyone!
  • A unique limestone relief.
  • An ideal outing whatever the weather: cool and stable underground!
  • Must-see sites: the caves of Sare, Zugarramurdi, Urdax and Isturitz-Oxocelhaya, all close to the campsite.
  • If you want to go even further, opt for a real caving outing with a professional guide.

Why go caving in the Basque Country?

Potholing is an obvious activity in the Basque Country.

Unique geological architecture

Unlike granite, limestone here is soluble. Rainwater has sculpted the rock over millions of years.

On the surface: lapiaz cut into the mountain.
Underneath: water rushing down wells and digging underground rivers.

This particular geology creates an incredible variety of profiles for an unforgettable caving trip in the Basque Country. From horizontal caves for families to vertical chasms for sports enthusiasts, everything is accessible!

Météo-proof” trump card

Let’s be pragmatic! The oceanic climate of the Basque Country is sometimes capricious. Caving is your best tactical joker! Rain or shine, the temperature underground remains stable, and you’re not bothered by sunshine or precipitation. It’s the ideal activity for saving a weather-crippled vacation.

Which caves in the Basque Country are popular with caving enthusiasts?

From your base camp in Urrugne, there’s no need to drive for hours to reach the La Verna cave or the Laminak cave in Tardets-Sorholus. Excellent caving spots are less than an hour’s drive from your accommodation. For all these activities in the Basque Country, we strongly recommend booking in advance, especially in summer.

The Sare cave

This is the area closest to our campsite (19 km away). The Sare (Lezea) cave offers an hour-long guided tour with sound and light through 900 m of converted galleries, at a constant temperature of 14°C. Please note that during the tour, cameras, videos, pets and strollers are not allowed, in order to preserve the site.

After discovering this cave in the Basque Country, take a moment to relax in the freely accessible megalithic park or museum.

Guide price: €10 / adult; €8.50 teenager (14 to 17 years); €6 / child (6 to 13 years).

Zugarramurdi cave

Located 20 km from our establishment, the Zugarramurdi Grotto is 120 m long and over 10 m high, and is crossed by the small stream known as “La Regata de l’Enfer”.

During your visit, follow an itinerary with explanatory panels, ideal for discovering the galleries in 45 minutes to 1 hour. Take your time to observe the walls and local fauna without disturbing them.

To extend the experience, head next door to the Musée des Sorcières, where you can learn more about the legends and history of the Spanish side of the Basque Country.

Suggested price: €6 / adult; €4 / child (6 to 12 years).

Urdax cave

Drive 25 km to cross the border at Dantxarinea, and you’re in the Urdax caves! There are no vast monumental halls here, but instead you follow a guided tour lasting around 40 minutes through galleries sculpted by the Urtxume stream. The “sound & light” ambience is gentle and focuses on the history of the site and the magic of the small limestone formations.

It’s a visit we recommend to caving enthusiasts looking for caves on a human scale in the Basque Country.

Price: €7 / adult; €4 / child (aged 4 to 14).

Isturitz & Oxocelhaya caves

Allow 50 km to discover this caving landmark! A visit to the Isturitz and Oxocelhaya caves takes you from a large archaeological hall to a mineral “cathedral”, marked by natural columns and draperies.

You’ll need to be in good shape to discover this site, as you’ll have to climb the 90 steps leading to the second part of the tour. Please note that photos are not permitted, except on dedicated tours!

Price: €12.50 / adult; €8.50 / teenager (12 to 17); €6 / child (4 to 11).
