The best paragliding spots in the Basque Country
Paragliding in the Basque Country is easy, as many sites are dedicated to the sport.
Urrugne: the paragliding and paramotor spot
Urrugne, located between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, is a unique site where you can practise motorised paragliding, also known as paramotoring. This type of flight allows you to take off using an engine, offering great freedom to admire the spectacular landscapes of the Basque coastline and beyond.
This paragliding spot in the Basque Country offers numerous possible routes. You can fly over the coastal cliffs of Urrugne, or reach places that are more difficult to access in classic paragliding, such as the Ibardin pass or Lake Xoldokogaina. For mountain lovers, it is also possible to explore La Rhune and the surrounding peaks.
If you prefer the coastline, a wonderful option is to follow the shore all the way to Bidart to enjoy beautiful seaside panoramas.

Baïgura: the must-visit spot in the Basque Country
Mount Baïgura, standing 897 metres high, is one of the most renowned sites for paragliding in the Basque Country. Listed as a Natura 2000 site, it offers magnificent landscapes that you can admire from above.
This spot is a favourite among paragliding enthusiasts. When conditions are favourable, dynamic flying is possible, and you can even embark on cross-country flights depending on your goals. Take-offs are possible in several directions – west, east and north – allowing for diverse aerial experiences. However, caution is required when the south wind blows, as it can make flying dangerous. The south-east take-off is reserved for experienced pilots due to the more complex conditions.
The launch site is managed by the Haize Hegoa club, but autonomous flights are allowed. To reach the take-off point, you can take a shuttle from the leisure base or walk up.

Sames: a paramotor-dedicated site in the Basque Country
Sames, located in the Adour valley, is the second official paramotor site in the Basque Country. Its main advantage? You can take off regardless of wind direction, offering great flexibility to discover the Basque Country from a different angle!
This site offers stunning views of the Basque hinterland. You will fly over the Adour and Bidouze valleys, as well as the Gaves, the true heart of the region’s river network. You can also admire the vast kiwi fields, a typical feature of this area, adding a distinctive touch to the landscape.
A flight over Sames lets you discover another facet of the Basque Country, far from the coastline.

Paragliding operators in the Basque Country
If you want to go paragliding in the Basque Country at Baïgura, you will need to fly with the Haize Hegoa club. This club, affiliated with the French Free Flight Federation (FFVL), offers tandem flights for beginners and solo flights for more experienced pilots.
You can also discover Hegaldaka, a FFVL-certified paragliding school located in the heart of the Basque Country. How to prepare for your paragliding flight?
Preparing for a paragliding flight is essential to ensure both safety and enjoyment.
Here are some tips to properly prepare your paragliding flight in the Basque Country:
- Choose the right weather: before setting off, check the weather forecast. Clear skies, mild temperatures and light winds are ideal for paragliding. Avoid very windy or rainy days.
- Check your equipment: make sure your gear is in good condition. The paraglider, harness, helmet and reserve parachute must be checked by a professional before each flight. If you are flying tandem, the operator will carry out these checks.
- Dress appropriately: adapt your clothing to the weather and length of the flight. Choose comfortable clothes suited to the conditions (thermal layers in winter, light clothes in summer). Don’t forget a good pair of closed-toe shoes.
- Prepare mentally: paragliding requires focus. Take a few moments to relax and centre yourself before taking off.
By following these steps, you maximise your chances of enjoying a safe and unforgettable flight.
